Literacy has a critical impact in every child’s education, career, and life. Literacy development supports a wholesome and developing child in both learning and growing into a successful and contributing individual. Research shows that even the most impoverished children can learn to read, however, we also know that children who are not reading by the third grade are at risk for falling behind or not graduating.
Literacy begins to develop in children at birth. Emergent literacy is the skills developed in literacy before a child learns to read and write.

EARLY LITERACY INSTRUCTION
Formal literacy development begins at an early age such as preschool or kindergarten where children begin to learn how to decode words, use comprehension skills, oral language structure, and vocabulary. Balanced literacy approaches that include daily reading, writing, and word work are critically important for all children.
